Tomas Jankauskas was a student at Pforzheim, and his Master's thesis project took inspiration from the Porsche Typ 64, built for the '39 Berlin-Rome race, translated into a revival for its centennial.
Some of his key sketches along the way:
Really starting to come together in these sketches. Loose, fast sketches figuring out the graphic breakups, that are still really descriptive of the form. Believably Porsche, but remaining original.
Profile graphic breakups. I really like his final execution.
He even ran his model through an airflow sim, apparently getting a .20 cD.
Mesh model:
Finishing the milled clay:
And some studio shots of the finished model:
And he did a nice little animation of it, to cap it off:

Anyway. Great stuff. He's now a designer at Toyota. Not often that student work (even MFAs) hit a mark this high.

Good for him, although nothing about his design is reminiscent of the Porsche at all.

That has just the right amount of throwback and brand essence, and at the same time it stands out as its own thing. Beautifully done!

It's reminiscent of the old one in the same way the new GT is reminiscent of the GT40. Meaning, kind of but not really.

I thought so, too.

It's not meant to be a J Mays "retrofuture" rehash. I'd read the design as Porsche if you took the badges off.

The new GT is very reminiscent of GT40 Mk. III in terms of proportion and design cues. The Typ 64 Concept 2039, while it looks awesome, gets rid of the primary element that makes the original so memorable: its shape. I'm not saying it's a bad job, but it's definitely hard updating a classical design that's so reliant on the shape of the car instead of its detailing. You can update the Miura and have the eyelash headlights and the bullhorn doors, and it'd be instantly recognizable as a Miura tribute. But something like an Type 64 or an E-Type? Much harder.

Truly do not get the bodywork going under the tires? Otherwise very nice.

Yeah, it seems the front wheels would have a pretty hard time turning.

I definitely see Porsche here.
